Reading Buddies Program

     The program was launched in 2000.  A volunteer provides assistance to struggling elementary readers in 11 area school districts. The program currently utlizies the skills of 125 volunteers who assist around 218 students. 

     This program has made a huge impact on the student's lives.  96% of students showed impovements in their reading scores by 0.5 grade level or more.

     The students weren't the only ones who benefited from this program either.  Volunteer Reading Buddies can utilize their skills that have been developed throughout their life to help mentor a yound person to become more knowledgable and confident. 

    Barb Anderson, a fourth grade teacher at Clear Creek Elementary, is a charter teacher of the Reading Buddies program that started in 2000.

     Over the past years she has enjoyed watching the program grow.

     "The volunteers are so delightful," said Anderson.  "I have really gotten to know them and they make such a strong connection with the kids as well.  The kids love them as much as we do."

     According to Anderson, the Reading Buddies program is making a difference at her school.

     She says the kids are becoming more involved with reading, which has resulted in imporved reading scores, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Elementary Student
