| Organization’s Mission: |
The Iowa Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program
commissions trained community volunteers to serve as an
effective voice in court for abused and neglected children,
strengthening efforts to ensure that each child is living
in a safe, permanent and nurturing home. |
|
|
| Brief “compelling” description of volunteer
position |
CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers
everyday citizens as appointed members of the court. In
an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected
children often slip through the cracks among hundreds
of current cases. CASA volunteers change that. Appointed
by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case
at a time—and commit to staying on that case until
the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others
may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant
that children need in order to thrive. |
|
|
| Tagline |
Stand up for an Abused Child |
|
|
| Time Requirement |
7-10 hours/ month, for a minimum of 12 -18 months after
completion of 30 hours of pre-service training |
|
|
| Skills Needed |
Committed, caring adults with a genuine interest in
the welfare of children, strong communication skills,
good judgment, a flexible daytime schedule and computer
skills are needed. |
|
|
| Population Served |
Abused and neglected children (0-17) under the protection
of the juvenile court |
|
|
| What Need is Addressed? |
Caseworkers and attorney assigned to the children have
large caseloads and are often unable to devote concentrated
attention to a child’s case. CASA volunteers have
one, or possibly two cases to assess, monitor and report
on. |
|
|
| Expected Results |
The Court will have additional beneficial information
to assist in making decisions for a child’s best
interests. |
|
|
| Benefits to Volunteers |
This is a challenging volunteer opportunity that can
provide a sense of satisfaction for helping a child to
be placed in a safe, permanent and nurturing home. |
|
|
| Benefits to Clients |
An unbiased, objective and independent voice in court
and a safe, permanent and nurturing home for the child.
