Margaret Dunbar
Margaret Dunbar, who was a nurse for 40 years, is quite active in her retirement. “I like to stay busy,” Dunbar says. Typical of many Baby Boomers, Dunbar, a breast cancer survivor, has several volunteer activities that keep her occupied.
One of Dunbar’s dominant activities is Reading Buddies. She participates in this on a weekly basis at Newman-Catholic Elementary School. Margaret clearly enjoys working with the children there as Dunbar believes that her association with the students helps her keep ties with her own seven grandchildren who attend the school. Margaret loves the enthusiasm of the children and feels Reading Buddies is important because parents are so busy these days and don’t always have the time to read to their children. Teachers are also busy and can’t always provide one-on-one attention that each student deserves.
“If they’re a good reader, that helps them excel in their other subjects,” Dunbar commented.
Other areas of involvement for Dunbar include her church, teaching a college course, Habitat for Humanity and a backup helper for her grandchildren.
